I. EPA – A Place of Encounter

  1. Breakfasts for our members and their colleagues from the different EU Member States:
    - 15.01.09: Informal meeting 
    - 05.02.09: Informal meeting

              - 07.05.09: Short progress report on the Strasbourg-Ortenaukreis Eurodistrict in the presence of

               - Mr. Frank SCHERER, Landrat of the Ortenaukreis (Germany). 

  1. Regulars’ Table (“Stammtisch”): since 12/02/07, and on proposal by our Vice-President Hans-Peter Mayer, MEP, we have opened the Caveau every Monday evening of the part-session from 6.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. and provided a buffet in a friendly atmosphere that welcomes, without any prior registration, Members of the European Parliament, their assistants and their stagiaires.

  2. Musical evening: on 13 January 2009 a concert by the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt (Austria) was organised with the support of Mrs Christa Prets, MEP as part of the Haydn year celebrations and was a thorough success. The concert took place at the premises of the EPA and ended with a convivial reception in the presence of the musicians, many members of the European Parliament and notabilities.

  3. Welcoming visitors' groups  of members of the European Parliament in co-ordination with the European Parliament. Priority is granted to our members. Documents on the functioning of the European institutions are made available.


II. EPA – A Place of Conference

  1. Conferences  in cooperation with the Institut des Hautes Etudes Européennes (IHEE) followed by a drink gathering students and speakers: 

    - 12.01.09: Mr Ari Vatanen, MEP - Topic: "The EU-Russia relationship: A difficult partnership between two giants"
    - 05.02.09: Office of the Ombudsman. Topic: "The role of the European Ombudsman" at the last moment                      - -21.04.09: Participation in the "Academic Forum on Security in Europe" (F.A.S.E.).
    Topic: "Deeper NATO/EU relations: A common vector of security?"
    Programme at the EPA:
     . Speeches by important figures on the "role of the European institutions in the Euro-Atlantic cooperation"
          - Mr Janusz ONYSZKIEWICZ, MEP
      . Dinner with the lecturers, the notabilities and organisers hosted by the European Parliamentary Association.
    - 10.03.09: Conference by Mr J.L. DEHAENE, MEP    

            -24.03.09: Conference by Mrs Benita FERRERO-WALDNER, European Commissioner                                             

             Topic:    "Future developments in foreign affairs".

            - 05.05.09: Mrs Claire GIBAULT, MEP. Topic: "The Condition of Women"

       2.    Conferences organised in cooperation with European Movement of Alsace (MEA) followed by a reception:

            - 03.02.09:  Professor Michel DEVOLUY, Jean-Monnet Chair - University of Strasbourg.
            Topic: "Europe facing crisis"
            - 26.03.09: Mrs Nathalie GRIESBECK, Mrs Catherine TRAUTMANN and Mr. Joseph DAUL, MEPs.
            Topic: "Priorities for future mandate-holders of the European Parliament "

        

III. EPA – A Place of Information

  1. Distribution of the newsletter "The EPA connection" to all Members of the European Parliament.

  2. Our website is kept up-to-date in three languages:
    - to inform our members about upcoming events organised for them
    - to promote European identity.

  3. A system was put in place to answer MEPs' questions relating to social, university and economic structures in the region.


IV. EPA – A Bridge linking the European Parliament, Civil Society and the Public

  1. "Family dinner" on February 4th and April 22nd, 2009
    Principle : a Strasbourg family, in partnership with the Alsace branch of the European Movement (MEA), hosts a MEP and his/her assistant(s) around an evening meal. The families are multilingual and their warm welcome has been appreciated by all of the MEPs who have taken part in the experience.
    Goal: to bring the MEPs and citizens closer together.
  2. Pierre Pflimlin Award and Research Grant:
    - A cheque to the value of Euro 1500 was granted to the Société des Amis des Universités de l'Académie de Strasbourg (SAUS) in recognition of the work of an outstanding student, Miss Irem ZEYNELOGLU, for her thesis entitled: "Essays on efficiency and budgetary coordination in interdependent economies: the approach of the New International Macroeconomic Model".

          - In the framework of the Pierre-Pflimin Award agreement with the students' association RETE-IHEE signed 

           in   2008, a total amount of Euro 1900 has been awarded to a student, selected by a Scientific  Board, specially     established to this end. The EPA has a consultative seat on his board.

                    

  1. Visit  on  March 21st 2009 to the Alsace/Moselle memorial at Schirmeck and the European Centre of Deported Resistance Members at Struthof, in which about 30 students of the Institut des Hautes Études Européennes (IHEE) participated.


V. EPA – Diverse Activities

  1. The appeal for membership fee 2009 was sent to the all the MEPs. The subscription fee of €40 provides free access to all the events organised by the EPA (breakfast, conferences, visits,..) and priority allocation of our premises.

  2. 11.03.09: The Executive Committee and subsequently the General Assembly convened.
